BMW X5 G05 – car audio upgrade, soundproofing and DSP tuning

The BMW X5 G05 is a premium SUV, but the factory audio system often leaves a lot to be desired. It can lack bass control, natural midrange, an open high-frequency response and a properly focused soundstage. That is why, in this project, we combined OEM-fit speakers, a DSP amplifier, an additional active subwoofer and soundproofing of key body areas.

The goal was not to simply add more equipment, but to build a complete system that sounds cleaner, more dynamic and better controlled. The whole installation was completed in a way that keeps the BMW interior looking factory, while making the improvement clearly audible from the first listen.

Car audio equipment used in the BMW X5 G05

For this project, we used equipment matched to BMW, allowing us to keep the factory interior aesthetics while significantly improving sound quality. Morel speakers work in the original mounting locations, Steg MDSP 12 handles amplification and DSP processing, and Audison APBX 10AS supports the lowest frequency range in the trunk.

Morel IR-BMW42 speaker installation in the doors

We installed Morel IR-BMW42 speaker sets in the front and rear doors of the BMW X5 G05. This solution is designed for BMW, so it keeps the factory appearance while delivering a much better sound. Compared to the original system, the sound is more open, vocals are clearer and the high-frequency range is no longer hidden.

Door soundproofing is very important when replacing speakers. Simply changing the drivers without working on door acoustics will not deliver the same result. Butyl mat reduces metal panel vibrations, improves mounting stability and allows the speakers to work with greater control.

Morel IP-BMWSUB82 subwoofers under the seats

The BMW X5 G05 uses factory under-seat subwoofer locations. In this project, we installed Morel IP-BMWSUB82, 20 cm OEM subwoofers designed for BMW. Their job is to improve mid-bass and upper bass response, which has a major impact on the dynamics of the whole system.

After installing the under-seat subwoofers, the system gained faster and more controlled low-end response. This is especially important in BMW vehicles, where the under-seat woofers are responsible for the foundation and energy of the lower frequency range.

Steg MDSP 12 – DSP amplifier and system tuning

The Steg MDSP 12 DSP amplifier allowed us to control the entire system properly. Good equipment alone does not guarantee a good result unless it is correctly tuned. DSP makes it possible to set time alignment, levels, filters and the sound character for the vehicle interior.

Thanks to DSP, the soundstage can be placed in front of the listener, and the individual speakers do not play randomly. After tuning, the system is more coherent, clearer and more enjoyable for everyday listening.

Audison APBX 10AS active subwoofer in the trunk

In addition to the OEM under-seat subwoofers, we used the Audison APBX 10AS active subwoofer in the trunk. This solution supports the lowest frequency range and adds depth that is often missing in factory systems.

Combining the under-seat subwoofers with an active subwoofer in the trunk gives bass that is fast, powerful and deeper than in the stock system. As a result, the music gains more weight without unwanted boominess.

BMW X5 G05 tailgate soundproofing

The tailgate in a large SUV has a significant surface area and can generate resonances. Soundproofing this element improves driving comfort and reduces unwanted noise from the rear of the vehicle.

Wheel arch soundproofing – less road noise from the wheels

Wheel arches are one of the key areas when soundproofing a vehicle, as a lot of tire and road noise enters the cabin from this zone. In the BMW X5 G05, we soundproofed the wheel arches with Comfort Spider mat to improve driving comfort and reduce noise on rougher road surfaces.

Why does this setup make sense in the BMW X5 G05?

In this project, we combined three elements: better speakers, more precise control through DSP and vehicle soundproofing. Only this type of approach delivers a premium result. Speakers alone, without door damping, would not use their full potential, while a good DSP processor without proper tuning would not provide the expected soundstage and control.

Morel IR-BMW42 is responsible for natural midrange and detail, Morel IP-BMWSUB82 strengthens the bass in the factory locations, Steg MDSP 12 allows everything to be set up correctly, and Audison APBX 10AS adds the missing depth in the lowest frequency range. Soundproofing makes the system play calmer, cleaner and without unwanted resonances.
