The Chrysler Pacifica is a large and comfortable van, ideal for long journeys, family trips and everyday driving. However, at higher speeds, this type of vehicle can generate a noticeable amount of road noise: tyre roar, wheel arch noise, surface vibration, wind noise and resonance from large body panels. That is why, in this project, we carried out a complete car soundproofing treatment for the Chrysler Pacifica.
The work included front doors, sliding doors, front wheel arches, rear wheel arches and the windshield cowl area. The goal was to reduce road noise, improve acoustic comfort inside the cabin and make the vehicle feel more solid and refined during everyday use.

Problem: road noise in the Chrysler Pacifica
In large van-type vehicles, road noise can be more noticeable than in smaller cars. This is caused by the large door surfaces, wide side panels, large wheel arches and spacious cabin. External noise has more space to travel through the interior, while some body panels can behave like thin vibrating membranes.
The most common noises heard by the driver and passengers include tyre roar, wheel arch rumble, water and stone impact noise, wind noise around the doors and a general echo inside the cabin. Proper car soundproofing is not about randomly applying one layer of material. Effective work requires identifying the noise sources and using different materials in the right areas.
Scope of work in the Chrysler Pacifica
In this project, we carried out multi-stage damping of the key areas responsible for acoustic comfort. The work included:
- soundproofing of the front doors,
- soundproofing of the sliding doors,
- damping of door trims with acoustic foam,
- soundproofing of the front wheel arches,
- soundproofing of the rear wheel arches,
- soundproofing of the windshield cowl area from the engine bay side,
- reduction of resonance from large body panels.
Such a wide scope of work makes sense especially when the vehicle is used for longer journeys. Damping the doors alone improves comfort, but only the combination of doors, wheel arches and cowl area gives a more noticeable effect in everyday driving.
Car soundproofing – why did we start with the doors?
The doors are one of the most important areas when soundproofing a car. In the Chrysler Pacifica, they have a large surface area and are located close to the ears of the driver and passengers. Road noise, wind noise and vibrations from uneven surfaces can enter the cabin through the doors.
In the first stage, we removed the door trims, secured the wiring and prepared the metal surface for the installation of damping materials. Butyl damping mats were applied to the inner part of the doors to reduce resonance and stiffen the metal panels. Then we selected additional acoustic layers to reduce noise transfer into the cabin.
Front doors – butyl mat, acoustic layer and resonance control
In the front doors, we used a combination of materials responsible for vibration damping and partial sound absorption. The butyl mat works directly with the metal panel and reduces its tendency to resonate. Additional acoustic layers limit sound transfer into the cabin and improve the behaviour of the entire door panel.
With this type of work, it is important not to block mechanisms, water drains, cables, guides or service access points. Car soundproofing must improve comfort, but it must not make future door servicing difficult. That is why each piece of material was fitted to a specific area.
Sliding doors – large side surface and noise from the rear cabin area
The Chrysler Pacifica uses sliding doors, which are very practical but acoustically create a large side surface. While driving, they can transfer road noise and vibrations from the rear part of the body. That is why, in this project, we did not limit the work to the front doors only.
The sliding doors were disassembled, cleaned and prepared for damping material installation. The inner panel received a damping layer, while areas prone to echo and resonance were supplemented with additional materials. This makes the cabin more acoustically solid and reduces noise transfer from the rear part of the vehicle.
Door trim damping with acoustic foam
The metal door skin is only one part of the work. Soundproofing the door trims is also very important. Plastic trim panels can resonate, rattle or amplify unwanted cabin echo. In the Chrysler Pacifica, we used acoustic foam and butyl mat on the inner side of the trims to reduce resonance and improve the fit of the panels after reassembly.
Proper door trim damping helps reduce panel noise, improves the behaviour of the entire component and supports the effect of the metal door damping. This is especially important in large doors, where the plastic surface area is significant.
Front and rear wheel arches – one of the main sources of tyre noise
One of the most important sources of road noise is the wheel arch area. This is where tyre roar, water noise, stone impacts, sand and uneven road surface noise are generated. In the Chrysler Pacifica, the wheel arches are large, so their soundproofing has a major impact on driving comfort.
In this project, we carried out soundproofing of the front and rear wheel arches. After removing the necessary components, we gained access to the inner wheel arch surfaces. The areas were then prepared and protected with properly selected materials. The purpose was to reduce tyre noise entering the cabin and minimise the sound of small stones and water hitting the wheel arch area.

Wheel arch soundproofing and comfort on long journeys
After soundproofing the wheel arches, the vehicle becomes acoustically calmer. The biggest difference can be felt on rough asphalt, at higher speeds and when driving in the rain. Car soundproofing in this area does not remove every sound completely, but it clearly reduces how intrusive the noise is.
In practice, this means less tiring journeys, easier conversation in the cabin and better conditions for listening to music. That is why, in large family vehicles, it is worth considering not only the doors, but also the wheel arches and the area around the windshield cowl.
Windshield cowl area – noise from the engine bay and front section
Another area we treated was the windshield cowl. This zone is located between the engine bay and the cabin. In many cars, this is one of the paths through which noise from the front part of the vehicle, accessory operation, airflow and vibration from the bulkhead can enter the interior.
In the Chrysler Pacifica, we applied acoustic materials in the cowl area to reduce noise transfer into the cabin. This is a good addition to the door and wheel arch work, as it helps improve comfort at the front of the vehicle, especially when driving at higher speeds.

Materials and installation method
During our work, we select materials according to the specific area. A different material works best on a large door metal panel, another one on the door trim, another one in the wheel arch and another one around the cowl area. What matters is not only the material brand, but also its thickness, flexibility, resistance to working conditions and the way it is applied.
Before installation, all surfaces are cleaned and prepared. Mats must adhere properly to the surface, and foams must not block mechanisms or technical openings. In the case of doors, it is especially important to maintain correct operation of cables, guides, water drains and trim mounting points.
Effect after the work
After the complete soundproofing treatment, the Chrysler Pacifica gains a noticeably calmer character. Reduced road noise translates into higher comfort in both city driving and long-distance travel. Tyre noise becomes less intrusive, the wheel arches are quieter, and the doors and trims feel more solid.
