Mercedes V Class W447 – complete Bitmat soundproofing and ESB Audio + Zapco car audio installation

The Mercedes V Class W447 is a premium luxury van designed for long-distance comfort, family travel and VIP transport. However, the large cabin, extensive side panels, roof surface, wheel arches and floor sections require professional acoustic treatment to reduce unwanted road noise and vibrations. In this project we performed a complete car soundproofing installation combined with a premium car audio upgrade based on ESB Audio speakers and Zapco amplification.

The interior was prepared using multi-layer acoustic insulation. The first layer consisted of Bitmat BM 2.3 butyl damping mats, installed on the doors, roof, floor, side cavities, wheel arches and front firewall area. The second layer was made with Bitmat PB 6.5 acoustic insulation, reducing road noise and improving cabin comfort. Additional acoustic foams were also used on trim panels, side panels and roof elements to reduce plastic resonance and improve interior acoustics.

Scope of work performed on the Mercedes V Class W447

  • complete soundproofing of doors, floor, roof, side cavities, trim panels and wheel arches,
  • first layer: Bitmat BM 2.3 butyl damping mat,
  • second layer: Bitmat PB 6.5 acoustic insulation,
  • additional acoustic foams on doors, roof, trim panels and wheel arches,
  • ESB Audio + Zapco car audio installation,
  • fully active front stage powered by DSP,
  • passively powered rear speakers,
  • ESB Audio 3.10D2 subwoofer in a dedicated fitbox enclosure,
  • Zapco ST-501D SQ MINI mono amplifier for the subwoofer,
  • Zapco HB 810 II 8AD DSP amplifier for the front and rear system.

Floor, cabin and side cavities – the foundation of acoustic comfort

The floor and side cabin sections in the Mercedes V Class W447 are large surfaces that can transmit road noise, tire noise, suspension vibrations and body resonance into the cabin. For a vehicle used on longer routes, proper floor and cabin soundproofing makes a noticeable difference in everyday comfort. Bitmat BM 2.3 stiffens the metal panels and reduces vibration, while Bitmat PB 6.5 adds an additional acoustic insulation layer.

This type of multi-layer treatment makes the cabin quieter, more refined and less tiring during long journeys. It also creates a better acoustic base for the upgraded ESB Audio + Zapco car audio system.

Firewall and front section – reducing noise from the front of the vehicle

The front section and firewall area are important when reducing noise entering the cabin from the engine bay, ventilation system and front body structure. Treating this area helps improve the acoustic balance inside the cabin, especially when combined with floor and door soundproofing. In a large vehicle such as the Mercedes V Class W447, this work contributes to a quieter and more refined driving experience.

Front doors – preparation for ESB Audio 4.165 and ESB Audio 4.28 speakers

The front doors are one of the most important zones in any car audio project. This is where the woofers operate, so the metal panels and trim elements must be properly stabilised. In this Mercedes V Class W447, the doors were prepared for ESB Audio 4.165 woofers and ESB Audio 4.28 tweeters.

The ESB Audio 4.165 woofers have very strong potential in sound quality systems, but they require a stable and well-damped door installation. That is why proper Bitmat soundproofing was so important in this project. You can read more about these speakers here: ESB Audio 4.165 speaker test.

Side doors, rear doors and side cavities – more comfort for passengers

Passenger comfort was one of the main goals of this project. The Mercedes V Class W447 has large side and rear body sections that can transmit noise and vibration into the cabin. Two-layer soundproofing combined with acoustic foams makes the vehicle feel more solid, quieter and more comfortable, especially on motorway routes.

Roof soundproofing – less echo, less rain noise, more refined acoustics

The roof in the Mercedes V Class W447 is a very large surface. Without proper damping, it can create resonance, echo and noise from rain or wind. Treating the roof with Bitmat BM 2.3 and PB 6.5 significantly improves the acoustic character of the cabin and helps the upgraded audio system sound cleaner and more controlled.

Trim panels and acoustic foams – eliminating plastic resonance

Professional soundproofing is not limited to the metal body panels. Interior trim, plastic covers, side panels and pillars can also resonate or rattle, especially when a powerful audio system is installed. Additional acoustic foams were applied to reduce these unwanted noises and to make the cabin feel more solid and refined.

Wheel arches – reducing tire, water and road surface noise

Wheel arches are one of the most important areas when soundproofing a large vehicle. Tire noise, water impact, stones and suspension vibrations are transmitted directly through these sections. In this Mercedes V Class W447, the wheel arches were treated with Bitmat damping materials and acoustic foams to noticeably reduce road noise inside the cabin.

ESB Audio + Zapco car audio system – active front stage, DSP and fitbox subwoofer

After the acoustic preparation, the Mercedes V Class W447 received a premium ESB Audio and Zapco car audio system. The subwoofer is powered by the Zapco ST-501D SQ MINI. It drives the ESB Audio 3.10D2, a 10-inch DVC 2+2 Ohm subwoofer installed in a dedicated fitbox enclosure and wired to 1 Ohm.

The second amplifier is the Zapco HB 810 II 8AD with DSP. It actively powers the front speakers and passively powers the rear speakers. The front system uses ESB Audio 4.165 woofers and ESB Audio 4.28 tweeters. The rear section uses ESB Audio 3.6C coaxial speakers.

Final result – quieter cabin and much better sound

The combination of complete vehicle soundproofing and a properly designed car audio system creates a result that cannot be achieved by simply replacing speakers. This Mercedes V Class W447 became quieter, more solid and much more comfortable on longer routes. The prepared front doors improved midbass control, the roof and trim panels reduced echo, and the floor and wheel arches reduced road noise.

The ESB Audio and Zapco system delivers stronger, cleaner and more controlled sound. The dedicated fitbox subwoofer does not compromise practicality, while DSP processing allows precise sound tuning and better staging.
