Why are rattles worse in cold weather?
At low temperatures, plastics become harder and less flexible. Different materials contract at different rates, creating additional gaps and contact points.

Door panel rattles

How can the source be found?
1. Identify when the sound occurs
Note whether the noise appears on rough roads, during cornering, at a particular temperature, speed or audio volume.
2. Empty the interior
Remove items from storage compartments, cup holders, door pockets and the trunk. Coins, glasses and charging cables often imitate trim rattles.
3. Carry out a road test with a passenger
A passenger can gently press suspected trim pieces. When the sound disappears after pressing a panel or vent, the area has probably been located.
4. Inspect the mountings
After removal, inspect screws, clips, hooks, wiring and visible marks caused by rubbing. Broken clips should be replaced.
5. Test after each change
Repairing and testing one area at a time makes it easier to confirm which change eliminated the sound.
How can rattling plastics be eliminated?
Cloth tape
Cloth tape can secure wiring and prevent cables from striking plastic or metal surfaces.
Technical felt
Felt separates components that move slightly against one another and can prevent plastic-to-plastic or plastic-to-metal friction.
Separating foam
Foam can fill a small gap, support a trim panel and reduce vibration. Its thickness must not distort the interior component.
Replacement clips
A broken clip cannot provide correct pressure. The correct replacement clip should be fitted rather than attempting to reuse the damaged part.
Correct reassembly
Even good materials will not help when trim is installed under tension or when hooks and clips are not aligned correctly.

- Do not apply random lubricants throughout the interior.
- Do not permanently glue parts that may require future removal.
- Do not use excessively thick foam that distorts the trim.
- Do not block drainage, ventilation or moving mechanisms.
- Do not place materials inside the deployment path of an airbag.
- Do not hide a mechanical fault with acoustic materials.
Airbags and pillar trim
Many vehicles have curtain airbags and related mountings underneath the pillar trim. Incorrectly installed foam, tape or wiring can interfere with their operation.
Areas near safety systems should be dismantled and treated according to the construction of the specific vehicle.
Does car soundproofing eliminate every rattle?
Soundproofing can reduce metal-panel vibration and large-surface resonance, but damping material alone will not repair a broken clip or incorrectly fitted door panel.
